Sciatica is the usually the result of pressure on the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs down the legs from the lower back, causing severe pain, which can make everyday activities difficult. Sciatica usually begins with a herniated disc in your lower back. As a disk begins to wear down, the soft interior can spill out from the disk and exert pressure on the sciatic nerve.

While a herniated disc is the most common cause of sciatica, there are other reasons you may not be aware of.

  • Injury / Trauma – an acute sports injury, car accident or fall could cause pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Your job – excessive sitting can compress the lumbar discs
  • Your shoes – High heeled shoes may push body weight forward, causing your lower back to be pushed out, causing extra pressure on lumbar discs.
  • Your clothing – Tight or constricted clothing can reduce circulation, especially if you job involves prolonged sitting. Take frequent breaks to boost circulation.

If you suffer from sciatica or other back pain, consult a pain management doctor who can accurately diagnose your pain and design a customized treatment plan to relieve your pain.
